Four Core Functions of Main Relief Valve
Valve Core Surface Wear and Sticking
Causes:
The main relief valve core undergoes mechanical wear due to its reciprocating motion in high-pressure hydraulic fluid over a long period. Hydraulic oil contamination and impurities entering the gaps, or oil deterioration producing slurry, can cause valve core movement to become stuck. Wear increases internal leakage, reducing pressure stability, while sticking leads to system pressure fluctuations or an inability to build pressure. Diagnosis often manifests as slow, weak overall operation or severe fluctuations in the pressure gauge.
Repair:
Disassembly, cleaning, and inspection of the valve core-valve body clearance are necessary. Use a professional cleaning agent to thoroughly remove sludge and impurities. For minor wear, the valve core can be polished and then ground to match the valve body for repair. For wear exceeding tolerances, the entire valve core and valve body assembly must be replaced. After repair, always test the valve core's full stroke in the valve body with clean hydraulic oil to ensure smooth and unobstructed movement and flexibility.
01
Pressure Adjusting Spring Fatigue Failure
Causes:
The pressure adjusting spring provides the balancing force for the set pressure. Prolonged exposure to high pressure compression or frequent pressure shocks can cause metal fatigue in the spring, leading to a shortening of its free length or a decrease in its stiffness coefficient. The direct consequence of spring failure is a reduced relief valve opening pressure, making it impossible to maintain the system's maximum required pressure, resulting in sluggishness in all excavator movements.
Repair:
Disassemble and measure the spring's free length and spring force. Use a spring tester to compare the spring against the original manufacturer's technical standards. If plastic deformation or spring force reduction is found, a brand new original manufacturer spring must be replaced. Before installing a new spring, check that its seat contact surface is flat. Never use a failed or mismatched spring, otherwise the correct set pressure cannot be restored.
02
Seal Aging and Damage
Causes:
Static seals within the valve body, such as O-rings, and dynamic seals on the valve core, gradually harden and lose elasticity under prolonged operation in high-pressure, high-temperature hydraulic environments. Aging of the sealing material can cause cracks or even breakage, leading to internal or external hydraulic oil leakage. Internal leakage causes insufficient pressure, while external leakage pollutes the environment and causes oil loss. This manifests as abnormally high oil temperature and a drop in tank oil level.
Repair:
After disassembling the valve, all old seals must be discarded. Carefully clean the sealing grooves using specialized tools, ensuring no residue or burrs remain. Replace with a new seal kit that perfectly matches the material and size according to the original manufacturer's manual. Apply clean hydraulic oil as lubricant during installation, taking care to protect the sealing lip and avoid twisting during installation. After replacement, a long-term pressure test is required to verify the seal's reliability.
03
Pilot control circuit blockage and damping orifice blockage
Causes:
The pilot circuit and its fine damping orifices are crucial to the valve's opening and closing response characteristics. Tiny solid contaminants or sludge in the hydraulic fluid easily clog these tiny channels. Blockage of the damping orifices alters the valve's dynamic response characteristics, leading to sluggish system pressure response, severe pressure fluctuations, or abnormal noise, seriously affecting the normal operating life of other hydraulic components.
Repair:
An ultrasonic cleaner is needed to thoroughly clean the valve body and pilot circuit components, completely removing contaminants adhering to the orifices. For fixed damping orifices, a very fine needle must be used with cleaning fluid for careful unblocking; enlarging the orifice diameter is strictly prohibited. Simultaneously, the root cause of the contamination must be located and eliminated; the system filter element must be cleaned or replaced to ensure the overall hydraulic system's fluid cleanliness meets standards.
