Common faults of turbochargers include
Oil Starvation and Bearing Seizure
The turbocharger shaft rotates at extremely high speeds and relies on a constant, clean supply of pressurized engine oil. A delayed oil flow after startup, a clogged oil feed line, low engine oil pressure, or using the wrong grade of oil can cause the bearings to fail from a lack of lubrication, leading to seizure and catastrophic failure.

Turbine Wheel Damage and Carbon Buildup
The turbine wheel on the exhaust side can suffer from thermal degradation and carbon buildup due to hot, sooty exhaust gases. It can also be damaged by ingesting parts from a failing exhaust manifold or valve. This leads to imbalance, inefficient spool-up, and a noticeable loss of power.

Over-Boosting and Engine Protection Shutdown
The engine ECU may derate or shut down if it detects boost pressure is too high. This is often caused by a stuck-closed wastegate actuator, a faulty vacuum/pneumatic control line, or a malfunctioning variable geometry (VGT) mechanism, forcing the turbo to produce excessive pressure that can damage the engine.

Sticking Variable Geometry Mechanism
In modern VGT turbos, vanes that direct exhaust gas can stick due to heavy carbon and soot buildup from poor fuel quality or prolonged low-speed operation. This prevents the vanes from adjusting, causing low power, erratic boost, and potentially over-boosting or under-boosting depending on their stuck position.
