Common Problem of Crankshafts Inclued

• Wear or Damage to Drive Component Attachment Points

  The keyway that locates the crankshaft gear or vibration damper can wear or become distorted. This is often caused by a loose fitting component, improper installation, or shock loads. A damaged keyway alters the timing of the camshaft and fuel injection pump, causing poor engine performance, and can lead to shearing of the key, resulting in a complete loss of engine timing.
• Bending or Distortion from Overheating or Overloading

  Severe engine overheating or a hydraulic lock (e.g., from coolant entering a cylinder) can impose extreme loads that bend or warp the crankshaft. Even minor warpage disrupts the precise alignment of all main journals, leading to uneven wear, severe vibrations, rapid bearing failure, and difficulty in achieving proper oil seal contact, which results in leaks.

• Damage from Lubrication Starvation or Contamination

  Insufficient oil pressure, contaminated oil, or incorrect bearing clearance can cause the main or rod bearings to fail. A failed bearing can spin, destroying the bearing journal's surface. In severe cases, the bearing material can weld itself to the crankshaft journal (seizure), causing sudden engine lock-up and requiring a complete engine overhaul or crankshaft replacement.
