Tensioner Bearing Wear and Failure
The sealed bearing within the tensioner pulley can wear out due to continuous rotation, heat exposure, or contamination from dust and debris. This leads to bearing noise (grinding or squealing), increased friction, and eventual bearing seizure. A seized bearing causes belt slippage, rapid belt wear, and potential accessory drive failure.

Loss of Tensioning Spring or Damper Force
The internal spring or hydraulic damper mechanism can lose its designed tension over time due to metal fatigue, fluid leakage (in hydraulic types), or mechanical wear. This results in inadequate belt tension, causing belt slippage, squealing noises during startup or load changes, and reduced efficiency of belt-driven components like the alternator, water pump, and A/C compressor.

Pulley Surface Wear and Misalignment
The pulley surface can become grooved, cracked, or glazed due to prolonged friction with the belt. Misalignment of the tensioner assembly-often from worn mounting bushings or improper installation-causes uneven belt wear, lateral belt movement, and premature failure of both the belt and other drive components.
