Damage: During operation, the piston pin forms a friction pair with the piston pin bore and the connecting rod small end bushing. In cases of poor lubrication or the presence of hard abrasive particles in the engine oil, axial scoring or localized wear can occur on its high-precision outer surface. This leads to increased clearance, knocking sounds, and in severe cases, piston skirt breakage or connecting rod deformation.

Repair: Measure the piston pin's outer diameter. If the wear exceeds the standard limit or there is obvious scoring on the surface, the piston pin must be replaced. When selecting a replacement, purchase one of the same repair size to ensure that the clearance with the piston pin bore and connecting rod bushing meets the standard. Before installation, clean the oil passages and apply clean engine oil to prevent initial dry friction.

Damage: To prevent the piston pin from axially moving and scratching the cylinder wall, its two ends are restrained within the piston pin seat bore by snap rings. When the engine is running at overspeed or when the piston pin and circlip experience axial impact, the edge of the circlip groove is prone to metal fatigue fracture, or the circlip itself may twist and deform under stress, causing the piston pin to dislodge and resulting in a serious cylinder scoring accident.

Repair:  During disassembly and inspection, if burrs or minor damage are found in the circlip groove on the piston pin, it can be smoothed with a fine oilstone. If the groove is deformed or cracked, the piston pin must be replaced. A new circlip must be replaced each time the piston pin is disassembled and reassembled. During installation, ensure that the circlip is fully embedded in the bottom of the groove and that the opening is not aligned with the notch in the piston pin bore.

Damage: Some piston pins use an internal oil passage design, where engine oil enters the connecting rod through a small hole to lubricate the pin and bushing. If engine combustion is inadequate or the engine oil deteriorates, carbon deposits and sludge easily accumulate in the piston pin's internal hole, clogging the lubrication passages. This can cause the pin and bushing to overheat due to lack of oil, leading to seizure and connecting rod bending.

Repair:  After disassembly, carefully inspect the piston pin's internal hole. If carbon deposits are found, thoroughly unclog it with a special cleaning needle and cleaning agent, and then blow it clean with compressed air. However, if the pin surface has turned blue due to lack of oil, it indicates that the material has softened due to annealing, and a new part must be replaced. Also, check if the oil pump's oil supply pressure is normal.

Damage: This is the most serious form of damage. When the clearance between the piston pin and the connecting rod small end bushing is too small, lubrication is interrupted, or under high temperature and heavy load, metal migration can occur, leading to surface fusion and adhesion. At this point, the piston pin cannot rotate freely, and the connecting rod's movement is obstructed, which can cause the connecting rod to bend or even break, destroying the engine block.

Repair: If sintering occurs, the piston pin and connecting rod bushing are usually unusable. A new piston pin must be replaced, and the connecting rod small end bushing must be reamed or replaced to restore the standard fit clearance. After repair, check the connecting rod for bending or deformation, and thoroughly clean the oil passages to prevent metal shavings from causing secondary malfunctions.
