Cavitation and Aeration Damage
Restricted oil pickup (from a clogged screen or low oil level) causes cavitation, where vapor bubbles form and implode inside the pump. This erodes metal surfaces, damages gears and housing, and creates loud knocking or whining noises. Aeration from air leaks in the suction line produces similar symptoms and accelerates pump wear.

Drive Mechanism Failure
The pump drive gear, coupling, or spline can wear, strip, or break due to misalignment, excessive load, or material fatigue. This results in a complete loss of oil circulation, often accompanied by metallic grinding noises, and requires immediate shutdown to prevent catastrophic engine failure from lack of lubrication.

Thermal stress from overheating or physical impact can cause the pump housing to crack or warp. Cracks lead to external leaks and pressure loss, while warping distorts internal clearances, reducing pumping efficiency and potentially causing the gears to bind or seize during operation.
