Four Core Functions of Throttle Motor
Motor Carbon Brush and Commutator Wear
Causes:
This is the most common point of mechanical wear. Long-term friction between the carbon brushes and the high-speed rotating commutator gradually shortens them, leading to poor contact, increased sparking, and ultimately, motor power loss or stalling. The commutator surface may also be burned by the sparks.
Repair:
Remove the motor back cover and check the remaining length of the carbon brushes. If they are usually less than 1/3 of their original length, they need to be replaced. Also check the commutator surface. The commutator can be lightly sanded with fine sandpaper to remove the burned oxide layer. In cases of severe wear, the entire carbon brush assembly, and even the entire motor rotor, must be replaced.
01
Damage to Output Gear and Worm Mechanism
Causes:
The throttle motor drives the external throttle cable or linkage through internal gears, mostly made of plastic or metal, and a worm gear reduction mechanism. Overload, frequent impacts, or poor lubrication can cause broken gear teeth and worn worm gears, resulting in slippage and inaccurate stroke.
Repair:
Open the gearbox for inspection. If the plastic gears are broken, the entire gear set needs to be replaced. Worn metal worm gears can be replaced, but pay attention to the clearance between the worm gear and the gears. After repair, the specified grease must be added, and the external load, such as whether the throttle cable is stuck, must be checked.
02
Circuit Board Failure
Causes:
The circuit board integrated at the rear of the motor is responsible for receiving signals from the ECU and controlling the motor's forward and reverse rotation and stroke. Vibration, moisture, or unstable voltage can cause components on the board, such as capacitors and driver chips, to break down or become poorly soldered, leading to motor malfunction or unresponsiveness.
Repair:
Visually inspect the circuit board for burning or bulging. Those with electronic repair skills can measure critical components, replace damaged chips or capacitors, and resolder any poorly soldered points. A more reliable method is to replace the entire circuit board module or assembly to ensure normal communication with the ECU.
03
Output Shaft Oil Seal Damage and Internal Water/Dust Ingress
Causes:
The rotary oil seal between the output shaft and the housing is prone to aging and cracking due to prolonged exposure. Under harsh operating conditions, water and dust can seep into the gearbox and motor through the gaps, leading to lubrication failure, gear corrosion, and short circuits.
Repair:
If oil leakage or contaminant ingress is detected, immediately replace the oil seal with a high-temperature dustproof seal of the same specification. During repair, thoroughly clean the inside of the gearbox, replace any contaminated grease, and check bearings and other components for rust. Also, check the dust cover mounted on the vehicle body for damage and take preventative measures.
