The engine RPM fluctuates unexpectedly or the throttle gets "stuck" at a certain position without operator command. This is frequently caused by internal wear of the motor's plastic gears, where stripped teeth prevent smooth rotation. It can also be due to a faulty feedback potentiometer inside the motor assembly sending incorrect position signals to the ECU, causing a continuous and faulty correction loop.

The ECU registers a "throttle motor signal fault" or similar diagnostic code. This indicates a problem in the electrical communication between the motor and the controller. Causes include a broken wire in the multi-pin connector, severe corrosion on the connector terminals, or an internal failure of the motor's control board. An intermittent signal, often due to a loose connection, will cause the throttle to cut in and out.

The throttle motor assembly contains a potentiometer that tells the ECU the exact position of the throttle lever. When this potentiometer wears out or becomes contaminated, it provides a false reading. The ECU may then command the motor to move to an incorrect position, leading to symptoms like the engine surging to high RPM at startup or refusing to accelerate past a certain point, as the ECU receives an erroneous "full throttle" signal.

The physical link between the throttle motor's actuator arm and the engine's fuel injection pump or governor lever can fail. This can be due to a worn-out ball joint, a broken linkage rod, or a loose retaining clip. In this scenario, the motor itself may be operating correctly and audibly, but its motion is not transferred to the engine, resulting in a lack of throttle response while the control system shows no electrical faults.
