Damage: The idler wheel directly contacts the track and is subjected to enormous compressive force and friction during operation. In conditions with abundant gravel or harsh terrain, the wear-resistant layer on the outer edge of the idler wheel will gradually thin, even exhibiting uneven wear, stepped wear, or rim curling. When wear exceeds the limit, it can cause track derailment, misalignment, and exacerbate track wear.

Repair: When the measured wear on the outer diameter of the idler wheel exceeds the standard value or obvious grooves appear on the surface, a wear-resistant layer can be welded on for repair. First, remove surface dirt, then perform layered welding with wear-resistant welding rods, and finally grind to restore the original contour. If the deformation is severe or the wheel body is cracked, the entire idler wheel assembly must be replaced to ensure the straightness of the track.

Damage: The idler wheel contains lubricating oil, and its seal relies on floating oil seals on both sides. Because it operates submerged in mud, water, and sand, and is subjected to severe vibration, the contact surface of the floating seal ring is easily scratched by hard particles, or the O-ring may lose its elasticity due to aging. Once the oil seal fails, lubricating oil will leak, leading to lubrication failure.

Repair:  If black sludge or oil leakage marks are found on the outside of the hub, the machine must be stopped immediately for repair. The idler wheel needs to be disassembled, the old floating oil seal removed, and the mud, sand, and metal filings inside the oil seal cavity thoroughly cleaned. Inspect the mirror surface of the floating seal ring; if scratches are found, the oil seals must be replaced in pairs. During installation, ensure the O-rings are twisted evenly and tighten the bolts to the specified torque.

Damage: The idler wheel rotates around its axis via internal tapered roller bearings or bushings. When the floating oil seal fails or there is insufficient lubrication, the bearing will wear and fail, manifesting as raceway spalling, rolling element wear, or cage fracture. Symptoms include abnormal noise during wheel rotation, jamming, or significant radial wobble; in severe cases, the wheel may seize up.

Repair:  After disassembling the idler wheel, rotate the bearing to check its smoothness. If there is jamming or excessive clearance, the old bearing must be removed and replaced with a new bearing of the same specification. Before installation, apply clean grease to the inside of the bearing, heat the inner ring of the bearing, and evenly insert it. After assembly, check if the wheel rotates freely and add an appropriate amount of new lubricating oil.

Damage: Some idler wheel structures use a sliding bushing and pin connection. Under overload conditions, it is difficult for an oil film to form between the bushing and pin, leading to direct metal-to-metal friction and high temperatures, resulting in scraping, adhesion, or even seizing. This causes a sharp increase in wheel rotation resistance, severely consuming engine power and damaging the mounting base.

Repair: If disassembly reveals adhered copper plating on the pin surface or severe scoring on the inner hole of the bushing, the bushing must be replaced and the pin repaired or replaced. Remove surface burrs with a reamer or sandpaper to ensure a smooth finish. Apply sufficient extreme pressure lithium-based grease during assembly. If the mounting hole is worn and enlarged, it needs to be repaired by welding and boring to the standard dimensions.
