The most common failure is coolant leaking from the designated weep hole or around the pump shaft. This indicates a failed mechanical seal. The seal consists of a stationary ceramic part and a rotating carbon part that wear against each other. Over time, abrasive contaminants in the coolant, improper coolant chemistry causing corrosion, or simply normal wear cause this seal to fail. A small drip is an early warning; a steady stream means immediate replacement is required to prevent bearing wash-out and engine overheating.

The water pump bearings support the force from the drive belt and the rotational force of the impeller. When these bearings fail, due to age, contamination from a leaking seal, or improper belt tension, they produce distinctive noises. Initially, a low whining or rumbling sound may be heard, which can progress to a loud grinding or growling noise. Excessive bearing play can also cause the pulley to wobble, leading to uneven belt wear and potential throwing of the drive belt.

If the bearings seize completely due to lack of lubrication or overheating, the rotating shaft will suddenly stop. This can cause the drive belt to snap, resulting in the loss of multiple engine accessories. Alternatively, the tremendous shear force can cause the pump shaft itself to fracture. This is a catastrophic failure that immediately disables the cooling system and requires replacement of the entire water pump assembly.

The use of plain water or a poorly maintained coolant mixture leads to scale formation (from minerals) and internal corrosion. This buildup can occur on the impeller, reducing its effectiveness, and, more critically, can clog the small coolant passages within the pump housing and the engine block itself. This restriction acts like a clogged artery, impeding the flow of coolant and causing the engine to run hotter than normal, even with a mechanically sound pump.
