Common faults of starter motors include
Intermittent Operation due to Faulty Wiring
Corroded, loose, or damaged cables and connections at the battery, solenoid, or starter motor itself can cause voltage drops. This leads to symptoms like the starter working only occasionally, cranking slower than normal, or only working after multiple attempts.

Pinion Drive and Bendix Failure
The pinion gear or the Bendix mechanism that throws it forward can fail. The gear teeth can wear down or chip, preventing proper engagement with the flywheel. This often produces a loud, high-pitched grinding or whirring noise as the spinning starter gear fails to mesh.

Brush and Commutator Wear
The carbon brushes are consumable parts that transmit electricity to the armature. Over time, they wear down and lose contact. A worn commutator (the copper contacts on the armature) will cause poor electrical connection, leading to weak cranking, intermittent operation, or no operation at all.

Solenoid Failure
The solenoid serves two functions: it engages the drive pinion with the engine's flywheel and it closes the high-current circuit to the motor. A faulty solenoid may produce a loud "click" but not crank the engine, or fail to engage the pinion, resulting in a spinning sound without cranking.
