• Sticking or Failed Pressure Relief Valve

  The pressure relief valve is designed to open at a preset pressure to protect the system. This valve can stick in either the open or closed position due to varnish buildup, contamination, or spring fatigue. If stuck open, it causes constant internal leakage and low system pressure. If stuck closed, it can lead to excessively high oil pressure, which can damage filters, seals, and other lubricated components.
• Excessive Wear on Gears and Pump Housing

  Over time, the meshing gears (rotor and idler) and the pump housing's internal surface experience wear. This is often accelerated by contaminated oil, abrasive particles, or infrequent oil changes. The increased clearance between the gears and housing allows oil to leak back to the inlet side, drastically reducing the pump's volumetric efficiency and its ability to maintain critical oil pressure, leading to potential engine damage.

• Inability to Maintain Prime or Generate Sufficient Pressure

  A primary failure mode is the pump's inability to draw oil from the sump or generate adequate pressure for engine lubrication. This can be caused by a worn or damaged drive gear tang, a severely worn pressure relief valve that is stuck open, allowing oil to bypass, or air ingress through a cracked pump housing or faulty inlet tube O-ring, which prevents the pump from creating the necessary vacuum.
