Common faults of cylinder heads include
Burnt or Eroded Exhaust Valves and Seats
The high-temperature exhaust gases passing through the valve seats cause gradual erosion and "burning" (formation of pits and cavities). This destroys the tight seal, leading to compression loss, power reduction, and abnormal combustion noises.

Leaking or Blown Head Gasket
The head gasket can fail due to improper installation, engine overheating, or excessive cylinder pressure. Failure can lead to oil or coolant mixing, compression leakage between cylinders, or coolant entering the combustion chamber (visible as white exhaust smoke).

Stripped or Damaged Threads
The threads for spark plugs (in gasoline engines) or glow plugs (in diesel engines), as well as those for manifolds and other accessories, can become stripped, crossed, or damaged. This is often the result of improper installation or overtightening during maintenance.

Corrosion in Coolant Passages
Contaminated coolant or the use of plain water can cause cavitation erosion and corrosion in the coolant jackets of the cylinder head. This can lead to pinhole leaks, coolant mixing with engine oil, or internal coolant leaks into the combustion chamber.
